Dr Jemma Green | Power Ledger

Topic: TBC

Dr Jemma Green was born in Perth and raised in the eastern hills. At age 22, and armed with a bachelor of Commerce in Finance from Murdoch University in Perth, she started a career in banking at JP Morgan in London. Here her work involved bringing sustainability and corporate social responsibility to the task of lending big money. This often involved persuading industries like mining to clean up their act, a challenge she relishes despite its complexity. In 2013, Jemma left banking and returned to Australia to complete a PhD in disruptive innovation. Here under Professor Peter Newman, she started to look at citizen utilities and the way apartment buildings could use solar and batteries in combination. It was a short step from this to setting up Power Ledger with her cofounders in 2016, which is a blockchain technology company that enables peer to peer trading of electricity and funding for renewable energy projects. Jemma has become a goto person on matters of cities, energy and transport in Western Australia and has made hundreds of appearances in the media commenting on related topics. She also finds time to be an independent councillor at the City of Perth, a board member of the Water Corp, Heritage Perth and Carbon Tracker, wife and a mother of one. She is the WA Business News 40under40 winner.
Dr W. Scott Stronetta, Ph.D | Co-Inventor of Blockchain

An insight into the creation of blockchain along with views on where it may be heading

While working at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), Dr. Stornetta co-invented, along with Stuart Haber, the blockchain technique. This helped lay the foundation for Bitcoin and other digital currencies (for example, of the eight citations in the original Bitcoin paper, three reference his and Dr. Haber’s work). Along with Dr. Haber, he co-founded Surety, a Bellcore spinoff. Surety’s offering constituted the first commercial deployment of a blockchain. Dr. Stornetta finished at Bellcore as Assistant General Manager of the 125-person Mathematical and Computer Sciences Laboratory. Dr. Stornetta consulted for many years, evaluating the commercial potential of emerging technologies on behalf of universities, commercial research labs, and venture capital interests. Dr. Stornetta received his Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University, after attending MIT, Harvard, and Brigham Young University.
